LS to sit today, but Food Bill on Mon.
Despite many ministers, MPs and leaders opposed to it, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar ruled Friday that the House will sit on Saturday. But the Food Security Bill will be taken up for discussion and passage only on Monday.
The Rajya Sabha, however, will not function Saturday.
No sooner had Ms Kumar announced that the House was adjourned for the day, and would meet Saturday that several MPs, including Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, urged her to cancel Saturday’s proceedings as they had other engagements. But she said she was helpless and could not overturn the business advisory committee’s decision.
Parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath said the Food Bill will be taken up only on Monday as many members would be away on Saturday, and had requested the Speaker to take it up on Monday as they wanted to speak on it.
