Maha against Kasab clemency
Replying to a report sought from the governor, the state home department has rejected Ajmal Aamir Kasab’s mercy petition and said that he should be hanged immediately. The state has also made the arrangements to hang Kasab in November this year. Home minister R.R. Patil said that his department would not change its stand even when the President would seek its opinion. Kasab has sent mercy petitions to the state governor and the President.
“There should be no clemency for the lone surviving mercenary of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack Ajamal Amir Kasab. In fact he should be hanged as early as possible,” recommended Maharashtra home minister R.R. Patil.
The Maharashtra home minister has given his opinion after he received a letter from the governor K. Sankaranarayan sent along with a copy of Kasab’s clemency application. He has commented that the state does not recommend that Kasab’s plea be recommended. “In fact, the state has made all the arrangements for hanging the terrorist and he could be hanged as early as November, 2012,” the minister has said.
“There are many copies of Kasab’s clemency petition sent to various authorities. There is one sent to the President of India, which will be coming to the state home department for its opinion. But our stand is clear. As I have written on this (governor’s) file, the state is of the opinion that Kasab should be hanged at the earliest,” said Mr Patil.
Kasab has been held guilty by the trial court and handed a death penalty. The Bombay HC and the SC have confirmed the death penalty and rejected Kasab’s appeal against it.
