Maha PCC is reconstituted
Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday appointed office-bearers of the Maharashtra PCC ahead of the crucial local body elections, including Mumbai and Pune which are considered “mini-Assembly” polls.
But the party is yet to take a decision on the nomination of a Mumbai regional Congress committee president.
The AICC might have approved the proposal for appointing PCC officials, executive committee and the election committee. But a formal decision about whether or not to fight these elections on its own has not been taken so far.
These elections will be the first test of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan’s performance who will complete first year in the office before these polls.
But the major challenge before Mr Chavan is whether he could revive the Congress in his home turf — western Maharashtra, dominated by the NCP.
Mr Chavan and the PCC president Manikrao Thakre played a major role in constituting the organisational team.
The AICC announced a jumbo PCC five months after appointing the Maharashtra Congress chief.
The announcement of the please-all Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee comes ahead of the elections to local bodies. The AICC had re-appointed Mr Thakre as the MPCC chief in late April.
In the newly-constituted MPCC, the post of working president, once held by Mr Jaywantrao Awale, has been abolished.
Mrs Gandhi appointed the new MPCC executive committee and the election committee on Wednesday, AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said here.
The new committee has eight vice-presidents, 25 general secretaries and 71 permanent invitees. Almost all former chief ministers of the state have representation on the MPCC.
Prominent among the vice-presidents are Mr Manikrao Gavit, Mr Rohidas Patil, Mr Sudhakar Gangane and Ms Rajani Patil.
Senior state minister Patangrao Kadam has been appointed treasurer while Mr Ramesh Thakur is the joint treasurer.
Among the general secretaries are Sanjay Dutt, HaribhauRathod, Nilesh Rane, Shobha Bacchaw, Mujjafar Hussain. Ramesh Shetty and Yogesh Dand have been appointed General Secretaries incharge of protocol.
Mr Prithviraj Chavan heads the 15-member Executive Committee, of which 14 are women leaders.
Besides, Mr Prithviraj Chavan, the 12-member Election Committee has former chief ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh,
Sushilkumar Shinde, A R Antulay, Ashok Chavan and Narayan Rane as members.
There are 26 Special Invitees, 71 Permanent Invitees and 38 Secretaries
in the MPCC.
The new MPCC has nine spokespersons including Ulhas Pawar, Anant Gadgil, Bhai Jagtap, Subodh Mohite, Ratnakar Mahajan and Nirmala Samant-Prabhavalkar.
