Mahanta for CBI probe into mega-dam projects
Assam opposition leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Sunday demanded a CBI probe into the process that led to the signing of MoU for construction of mega-dams in Arunachal Pradesh.
"The CBI probe is required as the Congress government in the centre had permitted the NHPC to build the mega dams including the lower Subansiri dam project," Mr Mahanta, a former chief minister told reporters here.
He alleged that the mega-dams will have adverse downstream affects in Assam and the Congress government both in the centre and state are responsible.
There has been large-scale opposition to the construction of mega-dams in the neighbouring states with influential organisations, including All Assam Students Union (AASU) opposing the projects.
On the demand from some Bodo ministers for a separate "Bodoland" state, the former chief minister alleged it was the policy of the Congress to divide the state.
"The ruling Congress has hatched the conspiracy to divide the state," he alleged.
