Maken asks Kalmadi not to go for London Games
The decision by a Delhi special court to allow former Commonwealth Games organising committee chief Suresh Kalmadi to visit London for the Olympic Games hasn’t gone down well with sports minister Ajay Maken.
“I don’t think he should go unless he is cleared of all charges. He himself should volunteer not to go (to the Games, beginning July 27),” Mr Maken said on Friday.
Earlier on Friday CBI special judge Talwant Singh accepted Kalmadi’s plea to be allowed to visit London during the Games in his capacity as a member of the International Amateur Athletics Fedaration council and president of the Asian Athletics Associa-tion.
Mr Kalmadi, on bail in a corruption case over the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, was required to furnish a bond of `10 lakhs and a similar surety.
The judge allowed his application as “arguments on his behalf are already over” and “arguments (by) the other accused are going on and will take time”.
The decision was also denounced by Clean Sports India, which was “extremely disappointed such a tainted official... will be at the London Olympics”.
