Malaysia says yes to CBI for Aircel probe
New Delhi: The CBI has received a response from authorities concerned in Malaysia with regard to judicial requests in relation to its probe of the Aircel-Maxis deal.
Trouble now seems to be in store for former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanadhi Maran. The CBI had on October 9, 2011 filed a case against them and five others over alleged irregularities in the deal.
“The CBI has received a response from the Malaysian authorities with regard to its letter rogatory in the Aircel-Maxis deal. The agency needs clarity on some points which might be referred back to the Malaysian authorities for giving detailed responses after which it might finalise its chargesheet in the case,” sources said. They added that the information received prima facie shows that FDI norms were allegedly violated in the deal.
The CBI in its FIR had alleged that Maran was involved in abetting the acceptance of illegal gratification — estimated to be worth over `547 crore — from the Malaysian firm. It also accused him of criminal misconduct during his stint in the telecom ministry.
