Kolkata, Aug. 29: Rallying behind the Trinamul Congress chief, Ms Mamata Banerjee, at the receiving end over her statement on the killing of Maoist leader “Azad”, the finance minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, made it clear on Sunday that “there was nothing wrong” with her statement.

Asked if Ms Banerjee was wrong to say that Azad’s killing was not correct, Mr Mukherjee said: “I don’t think so. We had a detailed discussion with the Prime Minister, home minister and Mamata Banerjee herself... and she has explained her position.” Azad was reportedly killed by the Andhra Pradesh police in Adilabad district on July 2. Ms Banerjee had called this “not correct” at her Lalgarh rally.

Meanwhile, the AP police said there was no need for a judicial probe into Azad’s killing but promised a comprehensive police inquiry to clear all doubts.
