Mamata: Consider minorities’ feelings

Banerjee said that while her party fully supports the bill, the sentiments of minorities should be kept in mind. Ms Banerjee’s remarks are significant given that some political outfits have demanded that there should be a quota within a quota for women belonging to the minorities and backward castes within the 33 per cent reservation of seats that the proposed legislation will provide for.
The bill which has been in the pipeline for over a decade now has not been able to pass the parliamentary hurdle as various political parties have opposed it over the years. The bill, now dubbed the Constitution (108th Amendment) Bill 2010 was passed by the Rajya Sabha in 2010.

Free season tickets for girls

March 8: On the International Women’s Day, Railway minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday announced free monthly seasonal tickets for local travel to girl students till their college-level education. “All girls up to college level will get free monthly seasonal tickets,” she said in the Rajya Sabha, winding up the discussion on the Railway Budget 2011-12.
The Railway budget has already been passed by the Lok Sabha. Earlier, BJP member Hema Malini took oath in Rajya Sabha.
