Mamata talks of early Bengal Assembly polls
West Bengal will go to the polls within three months if the Trinamul Congress wins the municipal elections, Trinamul chief Mamata Banerjee made clear while kick-starting her party’s election campaign Wednesday.
“If we win in the municipal polls, including the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Bidhannagar Municipality, we will not have to wait till 2011 for the Assembly elections. I have got an inkling from Delhi that we will go to polls within three months of winning the civic body elections,” Ms Banerjee told a rally in Kolkata.
“In the LS elections, people proved that the CPI(M) could be defeated. If the people come forward again, the CPI(M) will be thrown out of the state,” she said.
She did not attack the Congress despite Mr Pranab Mukherjee’s remarks of Tuesday. “We have a commitment towards the people and will not betray it. As long as we have respect in the UPA, we will not withdraw. It is an alliance of many parties and we shall stay unless dragged outside,” she said.
