West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday rejected reports of gangrape of a woman in Burdwan's Katwa and blamed the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) for orchestrating a malicious campaign against her government.

However, the CPI-M rubbished the allegations and said she had a habit of making irresponsible comments.

"A complaint of rape has been filed. Nothing has been found in the medical report. Where is the evidence? I do not think any incident of rape has taken place. I hear a political party, of which the woman's husband is a supporter, has planned to use its workers to cry rape," Banerjee said addressing the media here.

Banerjee on Monday had also asserted that the Katwa rape complaint was false and blamed a section of media for circulating untrue news. The chief minister's comments came hours after she denied having called the alleged rape of an Anglo-Indian woman in the city earlier this month a 'cooked up case'.

A middle-aged woman on Sunday filed a police complaint that she was raped by a gang of robbers after she tried to confront them during a robbery attempt in a suburban train near Katwa in Burdwan district.

Reacting to Banerjee's statement, Leader of Opposition and CPI-M heavyweight Surjya Kanta Mishra said Banerjee has a habit of making irresponsible comments.

"She (Banerjee) says the rape is fake and CPI-M has spread rumors about it because the victim's husband is our party worker. She seems to know everything but what she doesn't know is that the husband died 11 years ago," Mishra said.

"How much does she know about forensic or medical science that she dismissed the claims of rape, saying there are no evidences? She has a habit of making irresponsible comments," added Mishra.

Another CPI-M leader, Shyamal Chakrabarty said Banerjee blamed the party at every given opportunity.
