Man fails to save girl, ends life
A 23-year-old youth who failed to rescue his landlord’s daughter from committing suicide on Sunday afternoon, killed himself by jumping in front of a train in Annanur railway station on Monday morning on his way to the police station.
Harini, 18, a first-year student of a private engineering college, resided at Ayapakkam near Thirumullavoyilm with her family, while Karthik, 23, working in a private firm in Ambattur, stayed as a tenant in a room on the terrace in that house.
On Sunday afternoon, when Karthik was coming down from his room, he heard a sound from his landlord’s house and looked through the window to see Harini hanging herself.
Karthik went inside, brought her down and informed her father Shanmugham, who had gone with his wife to Thuraipakkam to visit their elder daughter and her family.
Karthik took Harini to hospital but could not save her. Some of the neighbours who learnt of the incident on Sunday evening reportedly asked Karthik why he had not informed others. Some even asked him if there was some relationship between the two.
On Monday morning, he was asked by Thirumullavoyil police to go to the station so that his statement could be taken as he was a witness to Harini’s suicide. While on the way, he jumped in front of a speeding train at Annanur railway station and killed himself.
The police said Harini had killed herself because she was not being able perform well in the mechanical branch. “She was the only girl student in the class and was finding it difficult for her to perform well,” the police said.
