Man held for drag racing, killing teen
Drag racing raised its head again on Sunday night killing a 12-year-old girl on Sardar Patel Road. The police arrested the bike racer for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Shylaja, riding pillion on her father’s bike, was crushed under an SETC bus on Sardar Patel Road on Sunday night after a speeding two-wheeler, part of a racing gang, hit her vehicle.
Shylaja, daughter of Hariharan, residing in Velacherry, was thrown off from the bike and crushed under the wheels of the bus.
Both were proceeding from Adyar to Velacherry when bike rider Suresh of Mambalam hit them. Immediately after the accident other motorists over powered Suresh and thrashed him up before handing him over to police.
The police on Monday said that the bike rider, son of a businessman, was under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
This is not the first time illegal bike racers on Chennai roads creating havoc for motorists. A few months ago a pedestrian crossing East Coast Road was hit by a speeding bike and was killed on the spot.
Suspected bike racers had caused accidents on Santhome high road at least a couple of times.
Earlier, the drag racers prefer to do racing on Sundays on ECR.
“They seem to be racing from one point to another point in the city. In such races they don’t even bother to stop at traffic signals,” said a cop.
