Mani becomes ‘attached’ Cong RS member
Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, who is in the eye of a storm over his controversial remarks on the Commonwealth Games, has become an attached member of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha.
Besides Mr Aiyar, another nominated member of the Upper House, Ram Dayal Munda, has intimated to the Rajya Sabha that he has become attached to the Congress, party sources said.
The move has come at a time when Mr Aiyar’s remarks on the Commonwealth Games have not gone down well with the party and which has given ample indication to partymen that they needed to be discreet while making any public statement.
At the AICC briefing on Wednesday, the party disapproved of the public sparring between Mr Aiyar and party MP Suresh Kalmadi, who is also in charge of the Commonwealth Games, over the mega sporting event.
“Seniority subsumes a certain sense of responsibility and we hope that those who are in senior position would honour the sense of discretion, when they speak in public on any issue,” party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters.
On the other hand, Congress leader Anil Shastri has deplored the “freestyle wrestling” between the two.
On the microblogging site Twitter, Mr Anil Shastri, a special invitee of the Congress Working Committee and editor of party mouthpiece Congress Sandesh, said, “It has become a free-for-all-affair at CG (Commonwealth Games). Freestyle wrestling is being witnessed at the preparations level itself. This is deplorable.”
Later, he said an intervention was needed in the matter as India’s image as a sporting nation was at stake.
Mr Shastri had earlier tweeted and dubbed the hike in prices of kerosene and cooking gas as “disastrous for the common man”.
