Manipal victim raped 7 km from campus
Udupi: Scared that the gangrape victim would escape and attract public attention in Eshwar Nagar, the three accused took the Kasturba Medical College student to a secluded place in Atrady, around 7 km from the Manipal University Library from where she was kidnapped, and raped her, the accused have told the police during interrogation.
The accused changed the crime scene after the girl tried to escape. Though the gang had initially planned to take her to a secluded place in Eshwar Nagar, they changed the plan after the girl jumped from the rickshaw. She suffered a fracture in her leg while trying to escape.
Fearing that the girl may attract public attention, the accused put the girl back in the rickshaw and drove to Atrady and raped her.
Third accused in manipal rape case arrested
Anand, the third accused in the Manipal gangrape case, who was undergoing treatment after he tried to commit suicide, was discharged and formally arrested by the police on Sunday.
Anand, who hails from Sannakkibettu of Parkala, tried to hang himself on Thursday, when the police were about to arrest him. Udupi SP Boralingaiah said Anand is being interrogated and will be produced before the magistrate on Monday.
The condition of first accused Yogesh Pujary continues to be critical and he is also undergoing treatment at KMC. It is learnt that the victim’s statement is yet to be recorded.
Commenting on the gangrape incident, Union minister for surface transport and highways Oscar Fernandes on Sunday said, “A new amendment has been passed in Parliament after the Delhi rape incident. An inquiry will be conducted as per law in this case, and the persons involved in the crime will be punished.
