Manmohan Singh condoles tiger Pataudi’s demise

The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who is currently in New York for the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), has condoled the death of former cricket captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.

Pataudi was passed away on Thursday after battling a lung infection for the last few months.

In his condolence message, Dr Singh said: “I am distressed to have learnt of the demise of legendary cricketer, Mansur Ali Khan, Nawab of Pataudi. He was a dashing and daring captain, who brought a new confidence to the Indian cricket scene.”

“Even after his playing days were over, he remained an iconic figure, an embodiment of poise and polish and a great advocate of sportsmanship,” he added.

Dr Singh further said: “I join thousands of Tiger Pataudi’s admirers in conveying my heartfelt sympathies with Sharmila Tagore and other members of the family.”

Pataudi, regarded as one of the finest Indian captains, played 46 Tests for the country, scoring 2,793 runs for an average of 34.91 with an unbeaten 203 being his highest score.

In all, he smashed six centuries and 16 fifties during his career.

Pataudi is survived by his wife celebrated actress Sharmila Tagore, actor son Saif Ali Khan and daughters Soha Ali Khan and Saba Ali Khan.
