Mantris will be Cong UP mantra
The Congress is relying on its Union ministers to revive the organisation in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The AICC has allotted 12 districts each to six ministers hoping that they would deliver this time.
The Congress is placed fourth in UP despite winning over 20 Lok Sabha seats in the 2009 general elections.
But reports coming from the state suggest that it will not cross single-digit number in the state in the Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress has been lacking organisational network in the state for over two decades. But it is now relying on Union ministers Salman Khurshid, Beni Prasad Verma, Pradeep Jain, Jitin Prasada, R.P.N. Singh and Sriprakash Jaiswal to deliver.
While Mr Khurshid will take care of Muzaffarnagar, Hapur, Meerut, Bagpat, Bulandshahr, Sambhal, Bijnour, Amroha, Saharanpur, Shamli, Ghaziabad and Gautambudh Nagar, Mr Beni Prasad Verma will concentrate on Aligarh, Agra, Firozabad, Mathura, Kasganj, Eta, Hathras, Farrukhabad, Mainpuri, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur Kheri and Sitapur.
Mr Jain would be in charge of Unnao, Kannauj, Banda, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jalaun, Fatehpur, Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Etawa, Auraiya.
Mr Jitina Prasad will focus on Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Allahabad, Jaunpur, Badaun, Pilibhit, Bareilly, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Hardoi, Rampur and Moradabad.
Mr R.P.N. Singh will focus on Mirzapur, Sant Ravidas Nagar (Bhadohi), Sonbhadra, Chandauli, Varanasi, Ghazipur, Balia, Mau, Azamgarh, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj and Lucknow.
Mr Jaiswal is expected to revive the party in Khushinagar, Deoria, Basti, Siddharth Nagar, Kabir Nagar, Gonda, Bahriah, Shrawasti, Balrampur, Ambedkar Nagar, Barabanki and Faizabad.
AICC general secretary in-charge of the party affairs in UP Madhusudan Mistry plans to tour each district in the state after realising that the ruling Samjwadi Party and the Opposition BSP and BJP are organisationally much ahead than the Congress.
Significantly, all the three parties have been working hard to expand their base outside their natural support base.
If the SP and the BSP are reaching out to upper castes after realising that their caste-based support cannot make them relevant politically, the BJP is playing the Ayodhya card with price rise, unemployment and governance against the Centre to consolidate its support base among upper castes and reach out to youth.
The Congress is depending on the food security programme, development and stability.
