Maoists kill 2, torch 8 trucks4
Raipur, Aug. 14: Suspected Maoists on Saturday killed two people including a special police officer (SPO) and set afire eight iron ore-laden trucks in two separate incidents in Chhattisgarh’s restive Bastar division, police said.
Sources said around a dozen armed rebels opened fire at two SPOs — tribal cops of Chhattisgarh — when they were shopping at the local weekly market in Badagaon village in Kanker district. While SPO Dhanush died on the spot, the other cop, Mr Raisingh, was seriously injured. The other person who died is a local, Durgu Dakua. The injured was rushed to the nearby government hospital.
In another incident, 50 ultras blocked the state highway at Nareli Ghat in Dantewada district by felling trees across it. They set afire eight trucks carrying iron ore to Essar Steel plant, 100 km away.
Meanwhile, state security has been beefed up to ensure an incident-free Independence Day on Sunday. The extremists have exhorted the people in Maoist-infested areas to observe the day as black day.
