Maoists rapidly expanding base

The Maoists, who have struck back with the kidnapping of the Italians, have reportedly identified certain areas to intensify their activities and establish network.

Apart from Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh, the Maoists are now rapidly getting into Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.

However, Delhi is being targeted mainly to tap the intelligentsia, who would take up Maoist causes. This section is used for ideological penetration into urban areas.

In 2011, in reply to a question in Lok Sabha, the Union home ministry revealed that the Maoists were also trying to build its base in certain districts in Maharashtra. These include Gadchiroli, Gondia and Chandrapur.

The home ministry stated that the Maoists also had plans to expand their movement to Nagpur, Wardha, Bhan-dara, Mumbai, Nashik and Pune. While the Maoists have already established “working relationship” with some of the insurgent outfits in Manipur, they are tapping anti-Indian outfits and leaders operating in Assam and the valley, sources said.

Speaking to this newspaper, a senior officer from Chhattisgarh said that despite efforts, the security forces were yet to make any major den in the Maoists- dominated Dandakarnya in the state.

It was further claimed that differences between Central and local forces were also one of the main reason for failure to infiltrate “liberated zones”, established by the Maoists. In fact Maoists have also been used by political outfits striving to come to power in states like Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
