Marines shifted to Borstal School
After living somewhat comfortably in the Poojapura jail for more than three months, the two Italian marines, Latorre Massimillano and Salvatore Girone, have been shifted to the Thrikkakara Borstal School in Kochi on Friday morning.
They were taken in a special jail vehicle at 9 a.m. and seen sporting their trademark white marine uniform.
According to prison authorities, they were happy to move out, and the Borstal school should be a better place for them, as it was normally used to lodge delinquent offenders.
The marines thanked the prison authorities for extending them a comfortable stay.
Before being shifted to the Borstal school, the two were produced before the Kollam chief judicial magistrate court at 11 a.m.
The government issued orders for the shifting on Wednesday after Italy’s deputy foreign minister Staffan de Mistura, defence minister Admiral (Retd) Giampaolo Di Paola and diplomatic mission in New Delhi pressurised the government for a better stay for the two marines.
The marines were involved in the Enrica Lexie shooting on February 15 in the sea off the Kerala coast that had killed two Indian fishermen.
