Maya gets clean chit on memorials
UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday gave a clean chit to BSP president Mayawati on the controversy surrounding the construction of parks and memorials in Lucknow.
“I have seen the monuments that have been constructed by Ms Mayawati and they are certainly not in any self-interest. They are dedicated to the memory of those leaders who struggled for the sake of the deprived sections of society and deserve to be remembered with respect,” he said while addressing BSP MPs and MLAs at the party office on Tuesday.
Earlier, Ms Mayawati had taken Mr Pranab Mukherjee round her residence at 13 Mall Avenue and showed him the murals on the wall depicting the journey of late Kanshi Ram and herself in the Bahujan Samaj movement.
“I told Mr Mukherjee that I live in just three rooms in the bungalow while the remaining space is dedicated to the memory of late Kanshi Ram through murals and statues. It was in this bungalow that Kanshi Ram stayed from 1995 onwards whenever he came to Lucknow and my party men wanted me to set up a memorial for him here and the place is now called Kanshi Ram Smriti Sthal,” Ms Mayawati said.
Mr Mukherjee, while thanking her for her party’s support, further said that this support from Uttar Pradesh matters a great deal to him since out of the total of 11 lakh votes, UP alone has 2 lakh votes in the upcoming presidential elections.
