Maya meets PM, seeks `2,351cr
Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Monday sought an immediate sanction of `2,351 crores from the Centre for flood relief in the state. Ms Mayawati, who met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday evening, claimed that the Centre has not provided any assistance to the state for flood relief so far.
The hour-long meeting of the UP chief minister with the PM came after a gap of over a year as she had skipped even the National Development Council meeting this year. Later speaking to reporters, she regretted that though the Centre provided immediate aid to Uttarakhand to tackle floods, the case of UP was ignored. However, Ms Mayawati expressed satisfaction at the assurance of Dr Singh to look into the demands of the state government. But a statement issued by the UP government later was critical of the Centre’s “discriminatory attitude” towards the state.
She sought Central assistance for a host of issues affecting the state, and later she said, “I told the Prime Minister that I would be grateful if the government of India takes effective steps on my demands.”
Besides funds for flood relief, Ms Mayawati also sought Central grants for Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojna, Rajiv Gandhi Vidyutikaran Yojna, Central Road Fund, fund for developing border roads and money for providing scholarship for OBC students and a special package for Bundelkhand and Poorvanchal.
