Maya, Mulayam, Lalu silent on Hazare stir

Prominent regional leaders, including Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav maintained distance from the social activist Anna Hazare’s crusade against corruption.
On the other hand, DMK chief and Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi, AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa and Trinamul Congress chief and railway minister Mamata Banerjee seem to have no time take a stand on it as they are thick in the electoral battle being fought in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Though the Samajwadi Party leader Mohan Singh and the RJD’s Raghuvansh Prasad Singh commented on the Jan Lokpal Bill and tactics adopted by Mr Hazare’s organisation, their party chiefs silence was significant.
The Congress insiders on Friday played down the agitation saying that it will have no bearing on the Assembly elections in Assam, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala and Puducherry, but indications of an early resolution of the issue were given in the afternoon itself. In fact, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s support to Mr Hazare was a significant development, which mounted pressure on the government to break the deadlock .
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said in Patna said, “I have full support to Anna Hazare for his campaign against corruption... It is manifestation of people’s pledge against corruption.”
“Anna is receiving overwhelming response,” Nitish added.
The Left has already backed Mr Hazare while a section of the BJP sees the veteran social activist as a new Jay Prakash Narayan.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
