MCOCA invoked against 8 in Dey murder
The Mumbai police on Friday slapped the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act against the eight accused allegedly involved in the murder of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.
“We have invoked the MCOCA against all the accused in the case,” said Himanshu Roy, joint police commissioner (crime). The accused were produced before the special MCOCA court and remanded to police custody till July 11.
According to a senior crime branch official, the MCOCA can be applied to the case, as the accused belong to an organised crime syndicate, and have also been chargesheeted twice in the last 10 years.
Apart from the seven shooters, the eighth accused in the case is Vinod Asrani, alias Vinod Chembur, a bookie-turned builder, who allegedly helped the shooters identify Dey. This is the second MCOCA case against Asrani.
