Media centre to be ready before time
Despite several Commonwealth Games projects facing criticism for slow pace of work and doubts over meeting deadlines, the media centre for the broadcast and coverage of the Commonwealth Games is scheduled to be completed before time.
The project, constructed at the cost of Rs 32 crores, is expected to be completed well ahead of time. Union information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni has given a July 26 deadline for an on-site inspection of the media centre, being constructed at Pragati Maidan.
The state-of-the-art Centre will provide facilities for media coverage and broadcasting during the games. For the first time in the country, Prasar Bharati will beam high-definition television service during the Commonwealth Games. And SIS Live has been chosen as the private broadcaster who will help Prasar Bharati in the HDTV broadcasting. Construction of 18 other media centres at all sports venues is also likely to be completed before schedule. The media centres will be managed by the Press Information Bureau. Approximately 2,000 mediapersons are likely to cover the event.
The timely completion of the media centre is being seen as a major achievement by the I&B ministry as the oversight committee, which has Ms Soni and law minister M. Veerappa Moily as members, has already conducted five meetings for an overall review of the project.
