Media procession to condemn Dey's murder

Mumbai's media fraternity will Monday afternoon take out a procession to protest the brutal daylight murder of senior crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.

Journalists of various print and electronic media organisations and associations will assemble at The Press Club and then march to Mantralaya, the state government headquarters two km away.

The action follows a condolence meeting on Saturday night in which rich tributes were paid to Mid-Day's editor (special investigations) Dey, who was shot dead by four unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants as he was riding on his bike near his residence in Powai on Saturday afternoon.

Several media associations, including The Press Club, Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh, Mantralaya Ani Vidhimandal Vartahar Sangh, Mumbai Crime Reporters' Association and TV Journalists Association have decided to take part in the procession.

The Press Club has demanded the resignation of state Home Minister R.R. Patil and Mumbai Police chief Arup Patnaik.

On Sunday, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan convened a high-level meeting to review investigations into the case. He ordered the police and crime branch to carry out the probe at a fast pace and make attempts to book the culprits at the earliest.

Chavan also directed that a special squad of investigators must be formed and probe the case. He ordered security for the family members of the slain journalist and extension of necessary financial relief.

Dey's funeral was held on Sunday where hundreds of people from different walks of life bid a tearful adieu to the journalist.
