MHA: Give security to 7 witnesses in 2G scam
The Union home ministry on Friday asked the Mumbai and Delhi police to provide security to seven witnesses whose statements have been recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in connection with the 2G spectrum scam.
According to sources, an urgent letter was sent following a request for the same by the investigating agencies, including the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED).
The untimely death of two persons with alleged links to the 2G scam also forced authorities concerned to provide adequate security to the witnesses in the case, sources added.
“Union home secretary G.K. Pillai on Friday wrote to both Mumbai police chief Arup Patnaik and Delhi police commissioner B.K. Gupta, asking them to provide security to the seven witnesses who had recorded their statements under Section 164 CrPC before a magistrate,” sources said. A statement which is recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC is considered as evidence in the court of law.
Sadiq Batcha (30), a close aide of former Union telecom minister A. Raja, died in Chennai last month under mysterious circumstances while 30-year-old Deepak Pushpanathan, Raja’s wife’s cousin, died on Wednesday after suffering a massive heart attack.
Deepak was working with Etisalat DB, a firm under the scanner of the CBI in connection with the 2G spectrum scam.
