MHA seeks UP rape report
After seeking report from the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government on the alleged rape case, the Union home ministry has cracked the whip on Uttar Pradesh, asking for a report on the Noida rape case.
Senior government officials said that the MHA has asked the UP home secretary for a report on the rape incident. The MHA has issued advisories to state governments repeatedly listing out specific guidelines on handling of cases of rape and sexual assault and treatment of victims. The conducts of the UP police officials is being seen as a complete violation of the laid down norms.
Twin advisories were issued by the MHA in the last two years on “media policy of the police’’ and crime against women which said “due care should be taken to ensure that there is no violation of the legal, privacy and human rights of the victims and no opinionated and judgmental statements should be made by the police while briefing the media.”
The UP police on Monday came under fire for revealing the identity of the Noida gangrape victim.
The MHA advisory had also said that during the first 48 hours, there should be no unnecessary release of information except about the facts.
