MHA seeks S’pore records
The Union home ministry has sent a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) request to Singapore in the December 16 Delhi gangrape case for seeking medical records of the deceased gangrape victim and issuing summons to the three doctors who treated her for testifying in the ongoing rape trial here.
The victim had been flown for treatment at a Singapore hospital where she passed away on December 29. The trial court has to take a final call whether the doctors can testify through video-conferencing or they will have to come to India to testify.
Government sources said the deceased victim’s medical records have also been sought from the hospital in Singapore since they have to be submitted in the trial court.
The sources said that the Indian high commission in Singapore has got in touch with the Singapore government on the matter.
Government officials said that the Singapore authorities have been extremely cooperative and they are hopeful of getting the medical records by early next week.
Also, a decision on whether a video-conferencing with the Singapore doctors who treated the victim will suffice will be taken soon as per the trial court’s decision, they said.
Meanwhile, the doctors in Singapore have been asked to communicate the dates convenient for them to be available for testifying before the court in the ongoing trial in case they are required in person.
Government officials said that the aim is to bring speedy justice in the gangrape case and efforts are afoot to complete the trial as soon as possible.
The 23-year-old gangrape victim had been admitted to the well-known multi-organ transplant facility Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore in an extremely critical condition where she succumbed to injuries.
She was earlier treated at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
