MHA sends dossiers on IM terrorists
The Union home ministry has sent dossiers to states containing details and photographs of Indian Mujahideen terrorists who are on the run. The ministry has shared details of around 20 active IM cadres with all states and advised them to be alert and look for them as some of them could be hiding anywhere in the country. Sources said majority of the IM terrorists are currently either living in Pakistan or in the Gulf countries but half dozen key operatives are still roaming freely in the country.
Investigators believe that the recent blast at Dashashwamedh ghat in Varanasi had been planned by IM leaders who are in hiding who may have activated the sleeper cells in the states to carry out the attack. Investigators are also probing the role of the IM in the shoot out at Jama Masjid in September this year. “An IM cell may be behind the Jama Masjid firing incident. Investigations are still going on,” a government official said. The official said that the IM sleeper cells are mostly located in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Kerala.
These states have been specifically asked to intensify their vigil for the terrorists, the official said.
Hunt is on for IM cadres who carried out the recce of the Dashashwamedh ghat and planted the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) to carry out the explosion. Investigators believe that arrested IM operative Shahzad Ahmed may hold the key to certain vital information and probe is on to get further leads on IM’s involvement based on his interrogation.
