MHA will aid Games probe: PC

Union home minister P. Chidambaram on Saturday said his ministry was ready to provide all inputs to the appropriate authorities looking into allegations of corruption relating to the Commonwealth Games.

Talking to reporters, Mr Chidambaram said, “If we are asked about what went wrong in the Games by the appropriate inquiring authorities, certainly the Delhi police and the Union ministry of home affairs will provide inputs”.
When asked what would the ambit of the probe, Mr Chidambaram said, “I don’t know. I have nothing to do with it. I can only say that the home ministry would provide any inputs on issues relating to problems in ticketing and accreditation for the Games.”
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday appointed a high-level committee headed by a former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) to go into allegations of corruption relating to the commonwealth games.
The committee, headed by former CAG, V.K. Shunglu, will submit its report to the Prime Minister within three months.
Besides, the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI are likely to begin scrutinising the documents pertaining to various allegations of corruption in the run up to the Commonwealth Games.
According to sources in the Central agencies, “There are also atleast 20 contracts related to the supply of materials to the Commonwealth Games venues are being scrutinised by the probe agencies.
The ED is also scrutinising the details of the payments made to an Australian firm namely Sports Marketing And Management (SMAM) by the OC. The ED has already requested the RBI to inform it whether or not the OC had taken its permission to carry out the transactions with the London-based A.M. Films and the Australian company SMAM, in connection with Queen Baton’s Relay and sponsorship commission, respectively”, sources said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
