MIM's Mayor to remain in office

Despite severing its ties with the Congress in the state as well as at the Centre, the MIM’s Majid Hussain will continue to occupy the seat of Mayor in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.

Though the MIM got the coveted post with the support of the Congress, it has decided not to vacate the seat but continue in it for the next two years beginning January 5, 2012.

MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi made it clear on Monday that, “As per our understanding with the Congress, the MIM candidate will hold the Mayor’s seat for the next two years.

The Congress has already held the seat for two years with our support. A decision on the fifth and final year will be taken later. Yet, if Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy wants to play games with the MIM, we are ready,” he said.

It may be mentioned that the Congress-MIM swapped the posts at the end of two years under the pact they reached after the GHMC polls in 2009.

Majid Hussain of MIM and Raj Kumar of Congress succeeded Banda Kartika Reddy of the Congress and Jaffer Hussain of the MIM as Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively.

Enquiries by this correspondent revealed that even if the Congress wants to pull the rug from under the feet of the MIM in the GHMC, it cannot do so. As per the GHMC Act, neither can the Mayor be removed nor a no confidence motion moved against him or her within three years from the date of assuming charge.

It's a drama being played by husband and wife. If the Congress has any self-respect, it should sever ties with the MIM in the GHMC Singireddy Srinivas Reddy TD Floor leader in GHMC

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
