Ministry plans to rope in NRI docs for AIIMS
The Union health ministry is mulling a proposal to attract NRI doctors to All-India Institute of Medical Sciences with attractive pay packages. The ministry has decided to invite NRI doctors under 50 years of age.
“We have decided to offer the best deal to the NRI doctors so that they come back. The doctors will be given lucrative packages, housing and research facilities. We will try to make it more or less look like the remuneration paid in foreign countries,” a ministry official said.
According to an estimate, over 1,200 doctors have migrated abroad out of which more than 60 per cent are less than 40 years of age.
In a recently held meeting of the faculty committee and permanent committee of the institute, it was concluded that the doctors are migrating to greener pastures because there is not enough scope of academic and financial growth. “We should make it attractive for the doctors to serve here. Or else brain drain will continue. We have to put a stop to it,” a faculty member said.
The minutes of the meeting were sent to Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. According to sources, Mr Azad has approved the proposal.
Also, the academic and research work of the institute is suffering due to lack of sufficient staff. The sources said that the Union Public Service Commission has not been able to select enough efficient professor and assistant professors. The institute has not been able to utilise the grants given by the United Nations because there are not enough faculty members who can be engaged for the job. This has cast a bad effect on medical research.
