Mirwaiz to PM: Resolve Kashmir
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Kashmir’s chief Muslim cleric and chairman of his faction of the separatist Hurriyat Conference alliance, on Friday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, to pledge a “meaningful course” towards resolution of Kashmir issue during his forthcoming visit to the state, instead of announcing any economic package or incentives.
“He is coming to Srinagar next month. My advice to him would be to seek an amicable and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute and pledge his unqualified support to an effort that could lead us to what is inevitable,” the Mirwaiz said while addressing a huge rally besides the Idgah “martyrs” cemetery here. The rally was held to commemorate the slaying of his father Mirwaiz Muhammad Farooq and another key Kashmiri separatist leader, Abdul Gani Lone. The Valley was shut on Friday for a general strike and the Idgah rally held beside the graves of the former Mirwaiz and Lone. They were assassinated by suspected militants 28 years ago.
