Mirwaiz: Revoke law in all of J&K
Kashmir’s chief Muslim cleric and chairman of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said on Friday that the amalgam faction would appreciate curtailing of controversial special laws, including Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, only if and when revoked from entire Jammu and Kashmir.
Reacting to chief minister Omar Abdullah’s announcing that the AFSPA and Disturbed Areas Act (DDA) will be revoked from the areas in Jammu and Kashmir that are deemed peaceful now “within next few days”, the Mirwaiz said, “Instead of withdrawing the AFSPA from some areas or districts, if entire Jammu and Kashmir gets rid of black laws we in the Hurriyat Conference will welcome it.”
He claimed that his faction of Hurriyat Conference was assured by the Centre during a round of talks in 2005 that the AFSPA will be repealed from the state soon. “But more than six years have passed, it is still there and continues to be used for impunity by the so-called security forces,” he said.
The Mirwaiz demanded complete revocation of the AFSPA and other “black laws” and also demilitarisation of Jammu and Kashmir. “Revocation of the AFSPA and complete demilitarisation are must for resolution of the Kashmir issue,” he asserted while addressing a Friday congregation at Srinagar’s historic Grand Mosque.
