Mizhi, a film inspired by Soumya incident
It has set out to shake the conscience of the state and is on its way to accomplishing this as the shooting for “Mizhi” the film based on the tragedy of Soumya, the girl who was raped at a railway station and and later murdered, was completed in Pallippuram near Alappuzha on Monday.
Shot in three schedules in Kozhikkodu, Kottayam and Alappuzha, Mizhi is slated for release on January 26, Republic Day.
Director Thejas Perumanna describes Soumya’s rape and murder as a social issue that needs closer scrutiny. “We have treated it accordingly,” he says.
Screenplay writer , Sree Varma Paruvanezhathu says the film has a message to convey.
“When an orphan gets pregnant after being raped at a railway station, she is exploited even more, and taken to a village named Ittikkara by an old man. Soumya was the victim of this desperate society . She was a victim of the commercialisation of women in society. We are trying to expose the so-called innocent people who hide their lust and passion,” he observes.
The woman-centric film has a whole line-up of actors, including Sudheesh, Asokan, Risa Bava , Pooja Vijayan, and Sona Haydan.
Says Pooja, who plays the role of Soumya, “This is a socially relevant subject . Soumya will never fade from the minds of people even if Govindachami , her killer is hanged to death.”
Four songs, written by Prajitha Mohan Das and Sudhir Ambadippad, set to music by Asim Sufi and Sunil Lal and sung by Yesudas and Chithra are a part of the film produced by KP Rajeev, Saj Bhaskaran and Surendran Edamula under the banner of U-Company Entertainment Limited.
