MLA, 2nd husband assaulted by mob
In what is alleged to be the fallout of provocation of a senior minister, Congress MLA Rumi Nath and her second husband Jaki Zakir, whom she married recently, were assaulted by a mob, which cornered the couple in a hotel in Assam’s Karimganj on Friday night.
Superintendent of police Pradip Pujari said that the mob, which was suspected to have been following them, caught the couple in a hotel where they had gone to have their dinner.
Ms Nath, who is pregnant, and Mr Zakir were severely injured and profusely bleeding before they were whisked away by the police immediately after the incident. The mob also assaulted the personal security officers.
The police also claimed that the MLA was advised to inform the police prior to her visit but she ignored the police warning and decided to have dinner and stay in a hotel.
Ms Nath also visited her Borkhola constituency earlier on Friday but the police managed to keep the protesters at bay. The police had posted a house guard at their residence too, security sources said.
The incident came close on the heels of Congress minister Gautam Roy’s provocative remarks at a public meeting at Hailakandi, asking the people to boycott the couple opting for inter-religion marriage. Mr Roy, the seniormost minister of the Gogoi Cabinet, was caught on camera making this appeal, which was alleged to be in obvious reference to Ms Nath.
Ms Nath, the 33-year-old Congress MLA, is also facing the wrath of people allegedly for leaving her first husband and two-year-old daughter and eloping with 28-year-old Zakir, her Facebook friend.
