MLA booked for ‘slapping’ rape victim

The Haryana police have registered a case against opposition Indian National Lok Dal MLA from Loharu, Dharampal Obra and his wife Sheela for allegedly slapping and threatening a 30-year-old physically challenged rape victim and her husband.
The two have also been booked for allegedly using casteist remarks against the victim and her husband, who are dalits and are from Obra village in Bhiwani.
“We registered an FIR on Saturday against Obra’s nephew Rajinder, who has been booked for raping the victim and making her video clips and threatening the couple. Dharampal Obra and his wife have been booked for slapping the victim, using casteist remarks and for threatening the couple,” Bhiwani’s superintendent of police, Simardeep Singh said on Monday. In her complaint, the victim has alleged that between October 2011 to February 2012, Rajinder, also from Obra village, raped her when her husband was away to Rajasthan for few months and made a video clip and threatened to eliminate her if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
However, in February, when the victim’s husband returned she narrated the incident to him.
The victim has alleged that the MLA stepped in to put pressure not to lodge a complaint.

Haldia row: Cong for CM intervention

Describing the situation in Haldia Dock alarming, the state Congress on Monday demanded the immediate intervention of chief minister Mamata Banerjee. “Monkey-cap wearing musclemen kidnapped officials of ABG and forced them to leave Haldia. This disastrous situation reflects the breakdown of law and order. What is going on in Haldia? And why is the state government totally silent?” Congress MLA from Sabang in West Midnapore Manas Bhunia asked. He also urged the chief minister to immediately hold a tripartite meeting to seek a peaceful resolution of the stalemate. Leader of Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra also voiced his outrage. “Trinamul men who wore monkey caps were behind the incident and have the blessings of an MP. Is this trade unionism?” he asked.
Mr Bhunia went so far as to wonder if there was a jungle raj in the state. “I want to know why the culprits who were behind the kidnapping incident have not yet been arrested,” he added.
Mr Bhunia said that he was writing to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and also to the Union shipping minister.
