Mobile TV may be on your phone in months
Mobile phone users in India may have to wait just a few months longer to watch television programmes on their handsets. The information and broadcasting ministry is likely to finalise mobile television broadcasting norms soon.
Sources said it was now in the process of laying down a suitable regulatory framework enabling private players to provide mobile TV services. This has been delayed over a year over several issues like spectrum allocation. “However, it is likely to be finalised soon and the launch of Mobile TV can be expected in the coming fiscal year,” the sources added.
This newspaper had first reported on February 3 last year that the I&B ministry had in a communication to Trai suggested digital technology as a mode of transmission for mobile TV, and sought to reserve Band V for Doordarshan’s mobile terrestrial TV services.
The ministry also asked the telecom regulator to suggest which states could be combined to form appropriate licence areas for operational and financial viability. It suggested the tenure of mobile TV licences should be fixed for 10 years, and that Doord-arshan’s requirements be factored in while finalising the number of service providers in each city.
