Modi to campaign in poll-bound HP
Realising his vulnerability in the coming Assembly polls in the state and also that when it comes to organisation, he is one among the equals, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has finally decided to campaign outside his state. A prime ministerial aspirant, Mr Modi has not only made an effort to mend ties with the RSS, which was miffed with him for taking unilateral decisions, but also decided to strike a conciliatory note with his party, whose recent election campaigns he had been boycotting despite requests by central leadership.
A day after meeting the RSS top brass, Mr Modi, considered as BJP’s star campaigner, has decided to campaign in poll-bound Himachal Pradesh. Sources disclosed Mr Modi will campaign in the hill state either on October 28 or 29 and will address two to three public rallies. Mr Modi, it was learnt, was told by the RSS that he should not put himself above the organisation. Even the RSS was miffed with him when he refused to campaign in recent Assembly polls. Mr Modi had also personally called up BJP’s Bihar unit chief C.P. Thakur after reports suggesting that party’s prominent leaders from Nitish Kumar ruled Bihar will not campaign in Gujarat, had created controversy.
It could be recalled that Mr Modi had rejecting repeated requests of central leadership to campaign in recent Assembly polls in states including Uttar Pradesh and BJP-led NDA ruled Punjab. He also did not campaign in Uttarakhand which was then under BJP’s rule. Mr Modi was apparently miffed over his bete noire Sanjay Joshi being given an important position in the party’s election management committee for UP. Mr Joshi, had to quit from BJP’s national executive after Mr Modi forced the party top brass to seek his bete noire’s resignation. This had irked both the RSS and the BJP top brass.
Sources disclosed factors including former BJP leader Keshubhai Patel’s Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP), rebel leaders, change in electoral profile due to delimtation exercise have been troubling Mr Modi. He went to meet the RSS top brass in Nagpur on Sunday to seek sangh’s help and guidance. He not only invited BJP top brass in his just concluded Vivekananad Yuva Vikas Yatra, which was part of the election campaign, senior party leaders including BJP CMs, will also be addressing public rallies fron next month in Gujarat where polls are scheduled in December.
