Modi at helm, but BJP tense
New Delhi: Led by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, a confident BJP is rapidly becoming an extremely worried party.
Most opinion polls have indicated that the saffron party might not cross the 160 mark in the Lok Sabha election on its own, which is a major cause of concern for the Sangh Parivar. The BJP will need at least 190 Lok Sabha seats on its own to come close to power.
Relentless efforts to “sell” Modi to the people are not evoking the expected response. This dismal scenario was discussed at Thursday’s crucial BJP-RSS meeting.
Coordination between Sangh Parivar affiliates for the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls was also discussed. RSS and BJP leaders discussed threadbare the party’s position in each state. There was speculation that the PM candidate issue was also discussed at the sevenhour meeting, but BJP president Rajnath Singh denied this, saying the discussion was on “economic, social and strategic issues” with political issues off the agenda.
The Sangh Parivar, it is learnt, wants the BJP to blend “Hindutva“ within its development and good governance plank. The party plans to launch its poll campaign after August 15 from states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan where Assembly polls are scheduled.
Meanwhile, senior leader Yashwant Sinha on Wednesday said, “ I can declare today that Modi will be country's PM in 2014.“ However, 24 hours later, he backtracked saying “I am no one to make Modi the next Prime Minister. This was my personal assessment of the prevailing political situation.“
