Modi not on BJP campaign list?
The BJP, which did not include Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi’s name in the list of its star campaigners for the coming Bihar Assembly polls, on Saturday claimed that the party is yet to submit names of its chief ministers to the Election Commission who would campaign in the state. Meanwhile, hectic lobbying has begun in the
party for the remaining key Assembly seats for which the BJP is yet to announce names of its candidates. Senior state leaders including party’s Bihar unit chief Dr C.P. Thakur, are lobbying for their candidates. Sources said Dr Thakur wants his son to be given a party ticket.
On Narendra Modi issue, senior BJP leader and national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said “There is a provision where we can invite any of our chief ministers to campaign for elections and a separate prior intimation at short notice can be sent to the Election Commission.” Sources however, disclosed that the issue has been settled as BJP leadership has told its alliance partner JD(U) that the Gujarat chief minister will not campaign during polls. JD(U) leader and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar had strongly objected to Mr Modi, considered as a Hindutva icon, campaigning in the state.
The BJP on Saturday announced five more names for the Assembly polls. The party has so far announced names of candidates for 92 Assembly berths. Sources said for the remaining 10 seats, senior state leaders are desperately trying to get their candidates nominated. Party sources disclosed Dr Thakur is lobbying for his son for Digha or Banikpore seats. The party along with its alliance partner JD(U) are yet to decide as which one of these two Assembly seats will go to which alliance partner. The BJP has authorised party chief Nitin Gadkari to nominate candidates for the remaining Assembly berths.
Of the five names that the party announced also include Narpatganj. The party dropped sitting MLA from Narpatganj constituency and has fielded a woman candidate Damayanti Yadav.
