MoEF team visits Nirma cement plant
The MoEF has deputed a team of experts to look into the whole issue of the 1.91 million tonne Nirma cement plant coming up in Mahuva taluka in Gujarat.
This is a follow up of a order by the Supreme Court asking the MoEF to look into the grievances of the farmers.
An eight-member team, led by Arshard Rehamani, visited the plant and also the affected villagers belonging to the Samadhiala and Dholiya villages. The villagers had appealed to the Supreme Court alleging that the plant will destroy their agriculture and cause irreparable damage to environment.
The villagers had appealed to the apex court since the PIL. They had filed in the Gujarat high court opposing the passage of the cement plant had been turned down. The state government had allotted a 268 hectare to the company from which the 222 hectare was part of a natural water-body. In a bid to arrive at an agreement with the farmers, the Nirma group had surrendered 100 hectares. The group had also been allotted more than 3,000 hectare as a mining lease.
