Mohanlal pledges organs after death

Mollywood star Mohanlal on Saturday promised to donate his organs after death.

Mohanlal expressed his willingness in a function at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences graced by Kochouseph Chittilappilly, prominent industrialist, who had donated one of his kidneys.

“The existing laws that deal with the organ donation must be amended to suit the modern times,” said Mohanlal after releasing a documentary on organ donation directed by Sasi Kalariyel of AIMS.

Organ donation campaign has got a big push in Kerala after Swathi Krishna got a part of liver transplanted from her aunt.

Lal praised Swathi’s father Krishnan Kutty, the government and AIMS for making it possible by swiftly organizing about 50 consent certificates.

Kochouseph said more people were coming forward to donate their organs, but the rate of donations to unfamiliar persons was still low.

“The doctor who undertook my kidney transplantation has by now done 1,000 kidney transplantations. Yes, the rate is going up,” he said.
