Molecular biologist Partho Sarathi Ray released from Alipore jail
Molecular biologist Partho Sarathi Ray, who was arrested in Kolkata for his alleged role in protests against recent evictions from a slum in the city, has been released from Alipore jail. Mr Ray was granted bail on Tuesday.
The academician, along with 68 others, was arrested on April 8 after he participated in a protest against the eviction drive at the Nonadanga slum in east Kolkata. He has been charged with assaulting policemen during a lathicharge on protesters in Kolkata on April 4.
In his defence, Mr Ray says he wasn't even present at the protest site on April 4. He has claimed that he at the time of the agitation, he was taking classes at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research at Mohanpur in Nadia district, which is a two-hour drive from Kolkata.
