Monsoon finally arrives in Delhi
The monsoon has finally arrived in the national capital, with nearly 60 mm rain recorded in 24 hours since Sunday night. The maximum temperature, in the high 30s and early 40s in the past few days, fell to 32 degrees Celsius on Monday, four degrees below normal. The minimum was 25.5 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal.
Safdarjung meteorological station director B.P. Yadav said the monsoon had brought with it 57.8 mm of rain overnight. Though there was no heavy rain most of Monday, the weather turned pleasantly moist, with cool winds blowing. The maximum humidity was 97 per cent, and the minimum 74 per cent.
The monsoon had earlier failed to keep its scheduled June 29 date, and there were fears it could get delayed further. But given the winds, the met department predicts the city will get good rainfall.
Neighbouring Gurgaon, Noida and Ghaziabad also received heavy rain in the past 24 hours. The Hindon and Indirapuram areas of Ghaziabad got 21 mm of rain; Noida got 27 mm and Gurgaon 35 mm of rain.
The weather office has forecast one or two heavy spells of showers in Delhi on Tuesday, while the sky is likely to stay cloudy throughout. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 35 degrees and 25 degrees Celsius respectively.
