Montek helps UPA check Opp. attack

In a bid to prepare Congress MPs to effectively counter Opposition attack, both inside and outside Parliament, on economic policy in general and recent CAG reports in particular, the ruling party on Tuesday held an orientation programme to apprise its legislators on steps taken by the Centre to insulate Indian economy from factors affecting slowdown.
The event, which apparently was the brainchild of AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, was conducted at Jawahar Bhawan here and deputy chairman Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia was roped in to brief the Congress legislators about state of Indian economy and the steps taken by the government to deal with the challenges on account of global scenario, drought and other such factors.
Sources informed that Mr Ahluwalia also explained to the MPs as to how the Opposition attacks on the government over CAG report pertaining to coal block allocations are “misplaced and motivated”.
Explaining the MPs as to how inflation and growth are interlinked, Mr Ahluwalia is learnt to have informed them about the steps taken to balance the two factors of economy. Arguing that food inflation, which has a cascading effect on the manufacturing products, is because of the supply side constraint. To improve this bottleneck and also to give better price to farmers, the MPs were explained the importance of FDI in multi-brand retail.
Mr Ahluwalia also explained about the steps taken by the finance ministry to improve general environment in the country to ensure easy inflow of funds from rest of the world.
Highlighting the improvement in the rural economy, which is considered to be politically sensitive, MPs were also given the statistics on the achievements made so far in implementing UPA’s flagship programmes like MGNREGA, PMGSY, NRHM, IAY etc.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
