More CWG scam arrests soon

The CBI is set to make some significant arrests in connection with its probe related to Commonwealth Games (CWG) contracts. The agency is also expected to register three more FIRs related to sponsorship contracts to an Australian firm, purchase of surface tracks for different stadiums and alleged irregularities committed in awarding broadcast contract (worth `246 crore) for the Games to a UK-based company by Prasar Bharti.

According to sources, the agency has so far registered a total of four FIRs in connection with three contracts related to CWG. The CBI, however, has not made any arrests in the FIR which is related to time scoring and result (TSR) systems. The agency is set to make major arrests in connection with the FIR related to the TSR system. The agency is likely to question Suresh Kalmadi, former chairman of the Organising Committee (OC), again in connection with alleged irregularities related to overlays and TSR system contracts.
“The CBI has booked two top brass of the OC — secretary general Lalit Bhanot and DG V.K. Verma — in connection with alleged irregularities in awarding a contract to a Swiss company for TSR system. The agency also carried out searches at 11 places, including residences of four close aides of Mr Kalmadi,” sources said.
