Most CWG merchandise has made-in-China label
Forget the competition between the two competing Asian giants, a large number of products being used in the CWG have come from China. Beginning with Shera cups, other souvenirs and merchandise products like the vuvuzelas and even T-shirts, to the furniture and fixtures used in the Games Village show “made in China” label being generously used.
Talking to this newspaper, Atul Shrivastav who is selling Commonwealth merchandise at his gift shop at the Delhi Zoo stated, “We have coffee mugs, vuvuzelas and even T-shirts with Commonwealth logos which are made in China.”
While, Abid Khan, who is selling CWG souvenirs at his shop in the Vasant Kunj area said, “Chinese products are cheap and they can always attract good sales. The Chinese products with CWG logos have had a good sale in my shop.”
A senior OC official stated that there are some CWG products which have been manufactured in China. However, the official added that most of the products have been made in India.
The OC officials also pointed out, “Some products meant for the games don’t have manufacturers in India, which is why Chinese made products have picked up good sales in the CWG souvenirs.”
Meanwhile, China on Thursday backed India’s ability to conduct the Commonwealth Games successfully saying that the Indian government has made “great efforts” to host them.
“No matter which country host such large scale Games, it is quite a challenge,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu told a media briefing.
