Mother burns cheeks of girl for taking `10
A woman burnt the cheeks of her seven-year-old daughter with a hot spatula on Wednesday evening for allegedly taking `10 without informing her.
The incident, which took place at Kotaveedhi under the One Town Police Station limits, came to light on Thursday morning when Child Line officials were alerted about the girl, Vasantha, and they in turn informed the police. It’s the second such incident reported in the city this year.
Sources said the girl’s mother G. Bangari had separated from her husband a few months back and had been living with her two daughters Vasantha and Devaki.
They said that Vasantha, who studies in Class 2 at Queen Mary’s school at Kotaveedhi, had told her sister that she had taken coins totalling around `10 from a box and spent it on eateries. When Ms Bangari came to know of the incident she decided to teach her daughter a lesson and dragged her inside the kitchen and burnt both her cheeks with the flat iron ladle.
Though the child was crying, she did not admit her to a hospital.
Members of an organisation noticed burn injuries on Vasantha’s cheeks when she was walking on the road and informed the Child Line. On Thursday morning members of Child Line reached the area to gather information. They then informed the police and took the girl and her mother to the police station where Ms Bangari confessed that she had burnt the cheeks of her daughter.
“I punished my daughter in an emotional state and have now realised my mistake. I will groom my daughters with love and care and will never commit such mistakes in my life,” said a penitent Ms Bangari.

A.P. singh: fix tenure of cbi chief at 5 years
Age Correspondent
New Delhi, Nov. 29
Outgoing CBI director Amar Pratap Singh on Thursday said that the tenure of the agency chief should be fixed at five years.
Talking to this newspaper, Mr Singh said that a fixed longer tenure (five years) for CBI director would act as a strong safeguard against interference and foster more accountability.
“If not five years, the tenure should be fixed for at least three years. I had already raised this issue before the select committee. This was proposed to ensure that future directors are insulated from the allegation of being the choice of the government alone, even though the present selection is, as per the procedure mandated by the Supreme Court, is absolutely fair and transparent,” said Mr Singh.
He said that the selection process of the CBI director should be made more rigorous and transparent. This will further increase the agency’s credibility in public eyes, he added. “The appointment of the agency’s director should be made by a panel comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and any other constitutional authority,” he said.
