Mother tries to sell girl child
Hit by poverty, a 21-year old woman allegedly tried to sell her 18-month-old daughter in Orissa's backward and tribal dominated Malkangiri district, police said today.
The woman, identified as Santoshi Bauri, allegedly tried to sell her baby Rani to one Keshab Sisha of Bimarangini village under Malkangiri police limits yesterday, they said.
However, fearing police action, Sisha aproached the police to ascertain legal consequences of the act.
Police later intervened and prevented the woman from selling the girl child, they said.
Police said the woman was married to one Sujit Roy of MV-14 in Malkangiri district about three years back.
Roy, however, deserted her and the infant recently, they said. For survival, Santoshi tried to take up various odd jobs but found it tough to sustain after which she tried to sell her daughter, police said.
The police handed her over to an NGO running a shelter home after preliminary investigation.
